"Basically, I have three areas of responsibility in the LTE-group," explains Nils Gönner about his tasks in the company. "I am responsible for the strategic planning regarding locomotive, for the scheduling and maintenance of the locomotives that are owned by LTE and finally for the coordination on the construction site in Gramatneusiedl, in the 'LOCMASTA' (LOComotive MAintenance STAtion)."
The success story began about 15 years ago when Nils anchored in Austria and first moored at ÖBB. He took care of the clearing of the building site and the renovation of the remaining service point for the S-Bahn, where Vienna's "Krankenhaus Nord" is today. After that he already joined the LTE-group, where, as a mechanical engineer and accomplished generalist, he feels responsible for all technical issues relating to locomotives, such as maintenance work, warranty processing and accident assessments. In the meantime, however, with the help of his own company, "Rail Engineering", other areas of responsibility have been added: for example, fleet management, strategic fleet planning and the associated approval processes.
This apparently hides another specialty of LTE-group, strategic locomotive procurement: “We took a slightly different approach here, because based on an idea of Andreas Mandl, we have switched to terminate rental contracts differently than usual, which in the end gives us more flexibility in planning,” explains Nils, “to my delight, by the way. An example: contracts with a deadline on December 31st is awkward, because nobody works on this day anyway.” This flexibility ultimately helped to circumnavigate the Corona cliffs with only a few scratches because as the transports from China collapsed in November 2019, we already had fewer locomotives and costs.
Like many of his colleagues, Nils Gönner is fascinated by classic and new approaches in the field of transport and logistics, such as the legendary Silk Road between Orient and Occident. That's why the family-father is currently working on his personal adventure: “At the moment I'm working on an old Steyr truck to turn it into a mobile home. With that we will follow in Marco Polo's footsteps,” the future globetrotter happily adds.
